Custom Boxes & Quotes

How do I measure a box?

When measuring a box, it's important to understand the standard dimensions used in the packaging industry: length, width, and depth. Accurate measurement of these dimensions ensures a proper fit for your contents and efficient use of storage and shipping space.

Always measure from the inside of the box to account for the thickness of the material. These measurements help ensure your items fit perfectly and are protected during transit. Here’s how to accurately measure a box:

  • Length: This is the longest side of the box when it is laid flat with the opening facing up. Measure the distance from the score on one end to the other score along the longest edge.
  • Width: This is the shorter side of the box when laid flat. Measure the distance from one the score on one end to the other score along the shortest edge, perpendicular to the length.
  • Depth (Height): This is the vertical dimension from the bottom of the box to the top when the opening is facing up. Measure the distance from the base score to the top score.

For more information check out our How To Measure A Box guide.

What is the minimum order quantity for custom boxes?

Minimum quantities depend on the type of packaging, dimensions, material and printing method required. Our online Custom Box Builder is designed to make short-run custom cardboard boxes accessible, while specialist and wholesale packaging projects may have different production requirements. Generally speaking for short run boxes our minimum order quantity is 1 bundle for plain and 2 bundles for custom printed.

Can I order a small quantity of custom boxes?

Yes. Short-run manufacturing is one of Boxes 24’s core capabilities. Our Custom Box Builder allows businesses to order custom-sized corrugated boxes without committing to the large production quantities traditionally associated with custom packaging.

Can you manufacture custom boxes to any size?

We manufacture a wide range of custom sizes. Boxes within the manufacturing limits of our online Custom Box Builder can be ordered online, while oversized, unusual or more complex packaging can be assessed by our packaging team and quoted separately.

What information do I need for a custom packaging quote?

Providing your required internal dimensions, approximate quantity, product weight, preferred box style, printing requirements and intended use will help us prepare an accurate quote. Existing packaging, samples, photographs or dielines can also be useful for more complex projects.

Can you help me choose the right box style?

Yes. The right box style depends on your product, packing process, transport requirements, presentation and budget. Our team can recommend suitable corrugated box styles, die-cut packaging, folding cartons, inserts or other packaging solutions based on your requirements.

How do I choose the right cardboard thickness or board grade?

The appropriate board grade depends on factors such as the size and weight of your product, stacking requirements, freight conditions and box design. If you’re unsure, provide our team with information about what you’re packaging and how it will be transported or stored.

Can you manufacture packaging from an existing box or sample?

Yes. An existing box or packaging sample can be useful when developing replacement or updated packaging. Our team can assess the structure, dimensions and materials and discuss whether it can be reproduced or improved.

Can you manufacture packaging from an existing dieline?

Yes. If you already have a packaging dieline, send it through with your enquiry. Our team can assess whether it is suitable for our manufacturing processes and advise of any changes required before production.

Can you manufacture oversized cardboard boxes?

Yes. Boxes 24 can assess oversized packaging requirements that fall outside the standard limits of our online Box Builder. Oversized projects may require different materials, manufacturing methods and minimum production quantities, so contact us for a custom quote. If your project is large format and we are unable to manufacture, we will advise.

Are custom box measurements based on inside or outside dimensions?

Cardboard box sizes may be described using internal or external measurements, so it is important to know which measurement is required. When manufacturing custom boxes, Boxes 24 generally works from the internal dimensions needed to fit your product. These measurements represent the usable space inside the finished box.

What is the correct order for cardboard box measurements?

Box measurements are normally listed as Length × Width × Height (L × W × H). For example, dimensions of 400 × 300 × 200 mm represent a box that is 400 mm long, 300 mm wide and 200 mm high.

Which measurement is the length, width and height of a box?

For a standard rectangular carton, the length is generally the longer side of the box opening and the width is the shorter side. The height is measured vertically from the base of the box to the top. Record the final dimensions in the order Length × Width × Height.

What unit should I use when entering box dimensions?

Boxes 24 uses millimetres (mm) for box measurements. If your measurements are in centimetres, convert them to millimetres before submitting your dimensions. Simply multiply the centimetre measurement by 10 — for example, 35 cm becomes 350 mm.

How much extra space should I allow around my product?

The amount of clearance required depends on what you are packing and how it needs to be protected. Consider the product’s dimensions, weight and fragility, along with any inserts, wrapping or protective materials. The aim is to provide enough room for secure packing without creating excessive empty space that allows the product to move around.

Should protective packaging be included in my box measurements?

Yes. When determining the internal size of your box, allow for anything that will sit between the product and the carton. This could include bubble wrap, dividers, cardboard inserts, padding or void fill. For a more accurate measurement, pack the product as it will be shipped and then measure the total space required.

How should I measure an existing box for a replacement?

If you want to reproduce the size of an existing carton, measure the inside length, width and height in millimetres. For corrugated boxes, take your measurements from the internal fold or score lines rather than measuring the closing flaps. Record the dimensions as Length × Width × Height.

How do I measure an irregularly shaped product for a custom box?

Measure the product at its longest, widest and highest points, including handles, closures or other parts that extend beyond the main body. Remember to include any protective packaging that will be used. If the product needs a specialist structure or custom insert, our team can help determine a suitable packaging solution.

Do I need to account for cardboard thickness when choosing my box size?

Generally, no. If you provide the internal space required for your product, you do not normally need to calculate the thickness of the corrugated board yourself. Boxes 24 can determine the appropriate manufacturing dimensions and board specification based on your packaging requirements.

What should I do if I’m unsure whether my box dimensions are correct?

Because custom boxes are manufactured to the dimensions provided, it is important to check your measurements carefully before ordering. If you are uncertain about the size you need or how your product should be measured, contact the Boxes 24 team before placing your order.

Is custom packaging suitable for a small business budget?

There are several ways to keep custom packaging cost-effective. Simple box styles, appropriate sizing, shorter production runs and digital printing can help reduce unnecessary costs. In some cases, a standard stocked box may be the more economical option. Our team can help you compare the available solutions.

Artwork & Custom Printing

What custom printing options do you offer?

Using state-of-the-art digital printing technology, we ensure your designs are reproduced with precision and clarity, utilising the CMYK colour model for rich, true-to-life colours. Boxes24 will provide the template of your custom box for artwork preparation after your order is placed.

Please refer to our Print Specifications for full details.

  • Plain: Plain boxes provide reliable protection for shipping, storage, or moving needs while allowing for easy customisation with shipping labels, stickers, stamps or markings.
  • Outside Print: Outside print on a box allows you to personalise the exterior appearance of your packaging. This feature enables you to print custom graphics, logos, serial numbers and barcodes or text on the outer surface of the box.
  • Double Sided: This feature enables you to print custom graphics, logos, text, or images on both the interior and exterior surfaces of the box. Choosing inside print enhances the unboxing experience, adding a personalised touch when the recipient opens the package. It can include messages, instructions, or branded elements that create a memorable impression.
Do you have templates of your boxes?

The dielines for our standard product range are available to download on each product page.

For custom boxes, using our Box Builder, we will create the custom dieline of your box for you. Upon confirmation of your order through checkout, Customer Service will email you the box template for your artwork creation.

How do I prepare artwork?

  • Maintain the dieline in a 1:1 ratio as per the template provided.

Bleed and Print Safe Area:

  • Include a 10mm bleed around all cut edges.
  • Keep all important artwork within the print-safe area, which is 10mm inside the scores/creases and cut edges.

File Format and Quality:

  • Artwork should be designed in vector format.
  • Recommended file formats for submission are Adobe Illustrator (.AI) or editable PDF.
  • Resolution: Minimum of 300 DPI.
  • Colour mode: CMYK. Pantone colours will be converted.

What file format should I supply my artwork in?

Vector artwork is generally preferred for packaging production, with Adobe Illustrator or print-ready PDF files commonly used. Artwork should include the required fonts, images, colours and packaging dieline. Our team can advise on specific requirements for your project.

Will I receive a proof before my boxes are printed?

For custom printed packaging, artwork is reviewed before production and a proof is supplied for approval. Production will only proceed once the required artwork approval process has been completed.

Can you print on both the inside and outside of my box?

Yes. Depending on the box style, material and printing process, packaging can be printed externally or on both the inside and outside. Double-sided printing is a great option for creating an enhanced unboxing or retail experience.

Can you print full-colour packaging?

Yes. Boxes 24 offers professional full-colour packaging printing. Digital printing is particularly suitable for shorter runs and flexible artwork, while offset printing provides premium print quality and consistency for suitable medium and larger production runs.

Can you match my brand colours?

Colour matching depends on the printing method, material and artwork requirements. If colour accuracy is important, provide your brand colour specifications when submitting your artwork so our team can recommend the most appropriate printing process.

What is the difference between digital and offset printing?

Digital printing prints artwork directly from a digital file and is generally well suited to shorter runs, multiple artwork versions and projects requiring greater flexibility. Offset printing uses printing plates and is generally suited to medium and larger runs where premium print quality, consistency and production efficiency are important.

Which is better for my packaging: digital or offset printing?

It depends on your quantity, artwork, packaging material, required finish and budget. Digital printing is usually better suited to short runs and flexible artwork, while offset printing becomes attractive for larger quantities and premium retail packaging. Our team can recommend the most suitable process for your project.

Do you charge printing plate or setup fees?

Digital printing does not require conventional printing plates, helping reduce setup requirements for short-run printed packaging. Offset printing and other specialist manufacturing processes may require printing plates, dies or additional setup depending on the project. These requirements will be outlined during quoting.

What are bleed and safe areas for packaging artwork?

Bleed extends artwork beyond the final cut line to prevent unwanted unprinted edges after cutting. Safe areas keep important text, logos and design elements away from cuts, folds and creases. Follow the artwork specifications supplied with your packaging dieline when preparing your files.

Can you design my packaging artwork?

Boxes 24 can assist with packaging artwork and print preparation. The level of design support required will depend on whether you already have completed branding, existing artwork or need assistance preparing a design for production and charges may apply.

Can you create a dieline for my packaging?

Yes. Dielines can be developed as part of the structural packaging design process. A dieline shows the cuts, folds and other structural elements required to manufacture your packaging and provides the template used to position artwork correctly.

Can small businesses order custom printed boxes?

Yes. Custom printed packaging is available for small businesses as well as larger brands. Digital printing is particularly useful for shorter production runs, product launches and businesses introducing branded packaging without committing to large print quantities.

What is the most affordable way to add branding to my packaging?

The most suitable option depends on your box style, quantity, artwork and required finish. Digital printing can be economical for shorter runs because it does not require conventional printing plates. For larger quantities or more specialised packaging, other printing methods may be more appropriate.

Packaging Manufacturing & Specialist Services

Are Boxes 24 a packaging manufacturer or reseller?

Boxes 24 is an Australian packaging manufacturer based in Western Australia. We manufacture custom corrugated cardboard packaging and provide specialist capabilities including digital and offset printing, die cutting, folding cartons, packaging design and print finishing.

Where are your custom boxes manufactured?

Our custom cardboard packaging is manufactured locally in Western Australia. Local manufacturing gives us greater flexibility over custom sizes, shorter production runs, repeat orders and ongoing packaging supply.

What types of packaging can Boxes 24 manufacture?

Our capabilities include corrugated shipping cartons, custom-sized boxes, die-cut packaging, printed boxes, product packaging, inserts and partitions, soft folding cartons and specialist retail packaging. We can support projects ranging from short-run custom boxes through to wholesale production.

Do you manufacture both corrugated boxes and folding cartons?

Yes. Boxes 24 manufactures corrugated cardboard packaging as well as soft folding cartons. This allows us to recommend packaging based on whether your priority is shipping protection, structural strength, retail presentation, print quality or a combination of these requirements.

What is the difference between corrugated cardboard and folding cartons?

Corrugated cardboard contains a fluted layer between liner boards, providing strength and protection for shipping, storage and heavier products. Folding cartons are generally manufactured from thinner paperboard or solid board and are commonly used for lightweight retail and consumer product packaging.

Do you offer die cutting?

Yes. Boxes 24 provides specialist packaging die cutting for custom shapes, folding cartons, inserts and packaging structures that require more complex cuts, creases, tabs or openings than conventional shipping cartons.

What types of die-cut packaging can you manufacture?

Die cutting can be used to produce mailer boxes, folding cartons, product boxes, inserts, partitions, tuck-in structures and other custom packaging designs. The best structure depends on your product and how the packaging needs to perform.

Can you prototype packaging before a larger production run?

Yes. Our short-run manufacturing capabilities can make it possible to test packaging before committing to larger ongoing production. Prototype requirements vary by packaging style and printing method, so speak with our team about the most practical approach for your project.

Can you help improve my existing packaging?

Yes. Existing packaging can be reviewed to identify opportunities to improve fit, protection, presentation, material use, packing efficiency or storage. Bring us an existing sample, dieline or your current packaging specifications and we can discuss possible improvements.

Can you help me choose the right packaging for my product?

Yes. If you are unsure about box style, dimensions, board grade, printing or order quantity, our team can help assess your requirements. Tell us what you are packaging, the product dimensions, approximate quantity and how the packaging will be used, and we can recommend suitable options.

What type of packaging is suitable for an ecommerce business?

Corrugated cardboard boxes are commonly used for ecommerce shipping because they provide protection during handling and transport. Businesses can choose from standard stocked sizes or have boxes manufactured to better suit their products. Custom printing can also be added when branded presentation is important.

Short Run, Wholesale & Business Supply

Do you offer short-run packaging?

Yes. Boxes 24 specialises in flexible packaging manufacturing, including short-run custom cardboard boxes. This allows businesses to order packaging around their current requirements rather than committing to unnecessarily large quantities.

What is considered a short packaging run?

Short-run packaging generally refers to quantities significantly below traditional large-volume packaging production.

Can small businesses order custom packaging?

Yes. Our short-run manufacturing and online Custom Box Builder are designed to make custom packaging accessible to small and growing Australian businesses as well as larger organisations.

Can I start with a small quantity and order more later?

Yes. Starting with a smaller run can be a practical way to test a new product, packaging design or market before moving into larger production quantities. As demand grows, we can discuss larger production runs, wholesale pricing and ongoing supply.

Do you offer bulk or wholesale cardboard boxes?

Yes. Boxes 24 supplies bulk and wholesale packaging for businesses requiring larger quantities or regular supply. Contact our team with your packaging specifications, estimated volumes and ordering frequency for wholesale pricing.

Do prices decrease when I order larger quantities?

Generally, yes. Packaging manufacturing becomes more efficient as production quantities increase, which can reduce the unit cost. The exact price breaks depend on the packaging style, dimensions, board grade, printing and manufacturing process.

Can you manufacture recurring packaging orders?

Yes. We can support repeat packaging requirements and ongoing production programs for businesses that regularly use the same packaging.

Can you support our packaging requirements as our business grows?

Yes. You can begin with short-run production and move into larger manufacturing quantities, wholesale supply and packaging inventory management as your requirements increase. This allows your packaging supply strategy to grow alongside your business.

Do you offer trade or business accounts?

Business and wholesale supply arrangements may be available depending on your packaging requirements and ordering volumes. Contact our team to discuss ongoing supply requirements.

Can you supply multiple types of packaging for my business?

Yes. Our broader manufacturing capabilities allow us to supply different packaging formats, including shipping cartons, printed boxes, folding cartons, die-cut packaging, inserts and other custom packaging.

Do you offer low-quantity custom packaging for small businesses?

Yes. Boxes 24 supports businesses that need smaller quantities of custom corrugated packaging, including startups, ecommerce stores and businesses testing new products. Our flexible manufacturing options allow you to order packaging based on your current requirements, with options to increase quantities as your business grows.

Can I increase my packaging quantities as my business grows?

Yes. You can start with stock packaging or smaller custom production runs and move into larger manufacturing quantities as demand increases. For established recurring requirements, Boxes 24 also offers wholesale packaging, scheduled manufacturing and packaging inventory management.

Do you supply packaging for Etsy, Shopify and other online businesses?

Yes. Boxes 24 supplies packaging for businesses selling through ecommerce platforms and online marketplaces, from startups and independent sellers through to established ecommerce brands. Options include stock boxes, custom-sized packaging, printed boxes and larger wholesale supply.

What packaging options are available for small businesses?

Small businesses can choose from stocked cardboard boxes, custom-sized corrugated boxes, digitally printed packaging and specialist packaging solutions. The best option will depend on your product, required quantity, budget, branding requirements and how the package will be transported.

I’m launching a new product. Do I need to order hundreds of boxes?

Not necessarily. The quantity you need will depend on the packaging type, dimensions, material and printing requirements. Boxes 24 offers short-run packaging options for businesses testing new products or launching new ranges, allowing you to start with a smaller production quantity where suitable before scaling into larger orders.

Packaging Inventory Management

Do you offer packaging inventory management?

Yes. Boxes 24 offers packaging inventory management for businesses with regular packaging requirements. We can manufacture agreed quantities, hold packaging stock and provide scheduled or call-off supply to help maintain availability without requiring you to store your entire packaging inventory onsite.

Can Boxes 24 hold packaging stock for my business?

Yes, for suitable ongoing supply programs. Stock holding allows agreed packaging inventory to be stored with us and released as required, reducing the amount of warehouse space your business needs to dedicate to packaging.

What is packaging stock holding?

Packaging stock holding means manufacturing packaging in economical production quantities and storing agreed stock on your behalf. Your business can then request smaller quantities as required rather than receiving the entire manufacturing run at once.

What is packaging call-off supply?

Call-off supply allows businesses to order packaging from stock that has already been manufactured and allocated to their supply program. Instead of waiting for a new manufacturing run every time packaging is needed, available stock can be released when required.

How does your 24-hour packaging call-off service work?

For eligible inventory-management customers with packaging already manufactured and held in stock, call-off orders can be prepared for release within 24 hours. This helps businesses maintain packaging availability without holding their entire supply onsite.

Can you manufacture packaging in bulk and deliver it as I need it?

Yes. For suitable ongoing packaging programs, we can manufacture larger quantities for improved production efficiency, hold agreed stock and release packaging in smaller quantities according to your requirements.

Can you schedule repeat packaging production?

Yes. Scheduled manufacturing can be used to help maintain agreed packaging stock levels based on expected usage and ordering patterns, reducing the risk of waiting until packaging has run out before beginning another production run.

Who is packaging inventory management suitable for?

It is particularly suited to growing and established businesses with predictable or recurring packaging requirements that want the benefits of larger manufacturing runs without storing all of their packaging onsite.

Can you help forecast our packaging requirements?

Yes. Historical usage, expected demand, lead times and production quantities can be considered when developing an ongoing packaging supply program. This helps determine appropriate manufacturing and stock levels for your business.

Production & Lead Times

How long should I allow for custom box production?

The time required to produce custom cardboard boxes varies depending on the specifications of the job. Box style, order volume, board grade, printing and finishing can all influence the production schedule. We’ll provide an estimated timeframe once we understand the requirements of your packaging project.

At what stage does the production timeframe start?

For made-to-order packaging, the production timeframe generally starts once the specifications have been finalised and the order is ready to enter manufacturing. For printed packaging, this usually means artwork and any required dielines must also be approved before production can begin.

Are ready-made boxes available sooner than made-to-order boxes?

Generally, yes. Boxes already held in stock do not need to go through the manufacturing process, so they can usually be prepared for dispatch sooner. Availability and dispatch timing will depend on current stock levels, order volume and freight requirements.

Does printing add extra time to packaging production?

Printed packaging involves additional production processes, so it may require more time than an equivalent plain box. The timeframe will depend on the print method, quantity, artwork requirements and whether processes such as die cutting, folding, gluing or other finishing are required.

Why do packaging production times vary between jobs?

Every custom packaging project is different. Production scheduling can be influenced by the quantity ordered, box construction, board or material required, printing process, finishing, artwork approvals and the complexity of manufacturing. We assess these requirements when providing an estimated production timeframe.

Can you manufacture packaging for a fixed deadline?

If your packaging is required by a particular date, include the deadline when requesting a quote. We can assess the specifications, quantity and current production schedule to determine whether your required timeframe can be accommodated.

How can I avoid delays with custom printed packaging?

Having your dimensions, quantities and packaging specifications ready can help move the quoting process along. For printed jobs, supplying suitable artwork and approving proofs or dielines promptly can also help prevent unnecessary delays before manufacturing begins.

Does order quantity change the production timeframe?

Yes, quantity can influence how long a packaging job takes to manufacture. Larger runs may require additional production time compared with smaller orders. Businesses ordering packaging regularly can also discuss scheduled production, stock holding and call-off supply with Boxes 24.

Is delivery time included in the manufacturing timeframe?

No. Manufacturing and freight are separate stages. Once your packaging has completed production and any required finishing, it is prepared for dispatch. The delivery timeframe will then depend on the destination and freight service used.

What details do you need to estimate a production timeframe?

Providing as much information as possible helps us assess your project accurately. Useful details include the box dimensions, approximate quantity, packaging style, board or material requirements, printing requirements and the date you need the packaging. We can then advise on an estimated production timeframe based on the job and our current manufacturing schedule.

Sustainability

Are your cardboard boxes recyclable?

Most standard corrugated cardboard packaging can be recycled through appropriate cardboard and paper recycling streams, provided it is clean and free from contaminants that prevent recycling.

Are Boxes 24 boxes made from recycled materials?

Many of the corrugated packaging materials we use contain recycled fibre. The exact composition varies depending on the board grade and material selected for the packaging application.

Is your cardboard responsibly sourced?

We work with established board and packaging material suppliers and can discuss material specifications and sourcing requirements for custom packaging projects where specific environmental criteria are important.

Can custom packaging help reduce unnecessary material?

Yes. Designing packaging around the dimensions and protection requirements of the product can help reduce unnecessary material and empty space. Efficient packaging design can also improve storage, pallet utilisation and freight efficiency.

What is the benefit of locally manufactured packaging?

Local manufacturing can provide shorter and more flexible supply chains, easier communication with the manufacturer and greater control over repeat production. For Western Australian businesses, sourcing locally manufactured packaging can also reduce reliance on packaging transported over long distances or imported from overseas.
